I am honored to have been appointed President of the 55th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine. The Meeting will be held over a four-day period from June 28th to July 1st, 2018 at the Fukuoka International Congress Center and Fukuoka Sunpalace.

In recent years, a variety of advances have been made in the field of rehabilitation medicine and in medical care. In the field known as “regenerative medicine,” which has been attracting a great deal of attention around the world, rehabilitation is an important key to ensuring satisfactory outcomes. Rehabilitation robotics, which is one of the many rehabilitation techniques, is in particular gathering a great deal of interest. The use of rehabilitation robotics has begun to be considered not only in regenerative and other fields of medicine, but also in the field of nursing care as a way to improve the quality of the nursing and medical care provided to the elderly. In addition to these examples of tangible advances being made in the fields of rehabilitation medicine and medical care, the significance of the intangible elements of rehabilitation medicine are also being reconsidered, for example, as an important part of team-based medical care. This is something that was powerfully emphasized by the experience of the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquakes and other disasters. Rehabilitation medicine and medical care, which support people’s ability to once again live fulfilling lives, can also be thought of as “The Medicine of Regeneration.” This idea of “regeneration” is something that we need to warmly embrace. Improving the rehabilitation medicine and care that is provided in hospitals and other medical facilities as well as in private homes will increase people’s amount of daily activity and thus promote their independence. It is this support that forms the base that will allow people to return to their normal daily lives as quickly as possible. And it is important for physicians involved in rehabilitation medicine and medical care to make major contributions throughout all the stages of illness, from the acute stage to the recovery stage and beyond.

One of the characteristic features of rehabilitation medicine is the fact that it includes variety of fields such as medicine, public health or welfare thus the range of its specialty and roles are varied indeed. In addition, the patients undergoing rehabilitation are widely varied and include those with circulatory diseases, respiratory diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, endocrine and metabolic diseases, diseases of the musculoskeletal system, neurological diseases, urological diseases, psychiatric disorders, malignant cancer, and pediatric diseases, among others, and in addition many patients suffer from multiple disorders. As a result, rehabilitation physicians require a basic knowledge of numerous medical departments, they need to constantly keep up with the latest available information, and they need to have the skills required to collaborate with physicians in other medical departments. According to a Survey on the Currently Required Number of Physicians that was conducted by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, physicians in the field of rehabilitation medicine are in the most demand. This means that the training of specialists in our field is an important task facing this Association. Specifically, among the most significant tasks facing this Meeting is the creation of a system that provides everything from the most basic knowledge to the very latest available information, the provision of opportunities for the presentation of the latest research in the field, and the ability to function as a venue for discussion and debate.

The theme of the 55th Annual Meeting is “Rehabilitation Medicine that Embraces Regeneration.” The idea behind this theme is the use of rehabilitation medicine and care for the purpose of the improved “regeneration” of people. We have prepared a full schedule of events designed to ensure that participants obtain the latest available knowledge in the field of rehabilitation medicine through presentations by guests invited from overseas, special presentations, symposiums, panel discussions, and jointly sponsored seminars. In addition, participants will be able to learn both knowledge and information through educational presentations on basic and clinical issues.。

I am looking forward to seeing a large number of participants at the Meeting.
