President of the 84th Annual Meeting of the Physiological Society of Japan
A Message from the President

The 84th Annual Meeting of the Physiological Society of Japan is to be held over the 3 days from March 20 to March 22, 2007, hosted by Osaka University, at International House, Osaka, in Uehonmachi, Tennoji ward. The Annual Meeting has not been held in Osaka since1983, so the city will be hosting the event for the first time in 24 years.

Over its long history, the Annual Meeting of the Physiological Society of Japan has amassed enormous wisdom regarding the working of the organs of the human body, and has contributed widely to the development of the field of basic medicine, both in Japan and overseas. Annual Meetings held in recent years have attracted attendances of over 1,500, drawn from this country and others, while the total number of sessions presented to date has reached some 900. Many symposia have taken place, some are organized by the Meeting Committee, and some are organized by public: covering topics ranging widely over the field of physiology, these occasions have seen advanced research results presented and discussed.

To ensure that the 24th Annual Meeting upholds this tradition and advances it further, the Scientific Committee and the university hosting the Annual Meeting will be carrying out the preparations in close cooperation. In view of the fact that the Congress of the International Union of Physiological Sciences is to be held in Japan in 2009, we also want to bring a greater degree of internationalization to this Annual Meeting, and to promote active interchange with other areas of life science research. To this end, the symposia will be held in English, and we hope to hold joint symposia with other Societies. The presentations will be restricted to poster presentations, and forums will be provided for free debate among fellow-researchers.

To make this Annual Meeting a meaningful occasion, active participation by all concerned is essential, and I ardently hope that you will lend us your support. I look forward to meeting you in Osaka.
