Lecture: Free Radicals and Essential Oils

Kazue SATOH

Kazue Satoh (Japan)
Affiliate Professor at the Department of Anatomy I, Showa University School of Medicine

After becoming an licensed pharmacist graduating from Toyama University, Ms. Sato worked as an assistant in the pharmaceutical technochemistry lab at Showa University.  She has been teaching at various universities since acquiring a doctor’s degree in pharmacology in 1982.  She has expanded her academic interests to many fields incorporating brain disorders, stress, free radicals/antioxidants and aromatherapy as well as food chemistry.

Lecture Summary

We constantly breathe in oxygen to live.  Oxygen partially becomes highly activated once taken into a living body.  In the skin exposed to the sun’s UV, radical oxygen, namely free radicals are produced, leading to lines and hyper-pigmentation, so-called photo-ageing.  Recently, aromatherapy has become quite popular in Japan on a daily basis.  While aromas and healing effects are enjoyed, academic interest in aromatherapy is growing in relation to its effects on disorders.  In the mean time, aesthetics treatments are for the whole body, which have some common factors with aromatherapy since they deal with the skin and relaxation.

Among various radical oxygen produced in the skin, we focus on singlet oxygen and have conducted research on the scavenging abilities of essential oils through electron spin resonance technique.  As a result, essential oils without scavenging abilities on singlet oxygen have proved to require special care against light.  It has also been found out that phototoxicity of those essential oils can be mitigated if blended with those oils that contain a substantial amount of singlet oxygen scavengers. Components of essential oils and inter-reactions with drugs and medicines will be also discussed.

Lecture Summary

The prevalence of body piercing and orthodontic treatment has increased during recent decades. Moreover it is common treatment to use Metal-on-Metal knee or hip Arthroplasty in our aging society. Such change in lifestyle may influence the occurrence of metal allergy. So we started to do patch testing(PT) about metal allergen for every patients before Arthroplasty in our hospital from 2003.
The aim of this study is to catch the patients of metal allergy before operation.
Because even though the price is high, if he’ll be able to understand about his condition of metal allergy, he can select the safety artificial articulation.
We investigated the PT results of metal allergy in about 1192 patients for a 5-year period between 2003 and 2007. 708patients were dermatological patients and 484patients didn’t have any skin problem ,have done patch testing before Arthroplasty Several studies have shown that oral nickel exposure can elicit systemic contact dermatitis in nickel-sensitive individuals. So we also checked the lymphocyte stimulating test (LST) with NiSo4 in peripheral blood before PT of metal allergen.
And then we compared and examined the results of PT and LST.
While there is a clinical impression that women are more skin-reactive than men, in this review the positive ratio of nickel PT , women were higher than men.
Aged patients before operation showed some positive reaction to metal allergen, but the positive ratio of metal PT was almost same to compare with dermatitis patients.
In our daily work, sometimes we observe rare cases of nickel induced dermatitis and I would like to show them.

Lecture & Demonstration Summary

Nowadays, we are said to be suffering from the simultaneous slowdown of the world economy, and the situation of our aesthetic industry is also getting even tougher.
However, clients seeking for health and beauty will never decrease, while their demands will become higher.  What they are seeking is “authenticity.”
Now is the time for us to pursue the authentic methods and provide them to our clients, which will definitely lead to future development of a salon.
In the mean time, do you know anything about “the Theory of Yin-yang and the Five Elements,” Chinese ancient philosophy?  This is applied to studies of Chinese traditional medicine that protects people’s health and guidelines of life that are a collection of their ancestors’ wisdom.
This theory is also applicable to aesthetics.  In this lecture, the method of using this theory to learn about clients’ true nature with a consultation technique based on Chinese traditional medicine will be introduced together with a demonstration of meridian and acupoints massage according to the outcome of the consultation called a therapy of Yin-yang and the Five Elements.

  • Origin of the theory of Yin-yang and the Five Elements
  • Distribution of the Five Elements in Chinese traditional medicine
  • Distribution of the Five Elements in the art of divination
  • Principles of the Ten subdivisions?
  • Therapy of Yin-yang and the Five Elements applicable to salon situation
  • Theory of twelve meridians and vessels
  • Basic information of meridian massage
I hope this will be the occasion for the audience to acquire “real and definite basic knowledge” in order to meet clients’ needs that will become even more demanding.

Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine that is indigenous to the Indian sub-continent. The word Ayurveda is a Sanskrit term meaning “Science of Life”.  Ayurveda, Yoga and Tantra are the ancient life-disciplines that have been practiced in India for 5000 years. They are mentioned in the scriptures of the Vedas and Upanishads. Ayurveda propagates the achievement of good health and longevity.
. According to Ayurveda, the human body is composed of four basics elements-a) dosha, b)dhatu, c) mala and d) agni.   a) Doshas are of three type known as tridosha.  They are vatta, pitta and kapha. Thus. the dynamic equilibrium of these dosha is the basic requirement of a healthy body  Ayurved focuses on healthy living rather than treatment of disease.

Ayurveda emphasizes preventative and healing therapies, along with myriad methods of purification and rejuvenation of the body, mind and soul. Apart from being a healing system, it is a science that focuses on  art of appropriate living. It tells us how to achieve longevity and live a life that is free of diseases. Panchakarma is Ayurveda's one of the ancient and important purification and detoxification treatments. In Sanskrit, the word 'Panchakarma literally means "five therapies", which suggests that it is a comprehensive system of knowledge and practices to purify the body of toxins and restore it to balance with the law of Mother Nature.
The therapies deal with stress related problems and the toxins that may trigger an ailment, at the same time, they concentrate on creating a balance between the doshas (energies that govern all biological functions). Although Panchakarma is a highly effective therapy, it can remain ineffective, if the person doesn't follow a special detoxification diet, along with the treatments.  In this modern era, unhealthy diet, stressful life and lack of exercise  lead to the release of toxins in the body, Ayurvedic techniques will helpmaintain a healthy body.

Lecture Summary

Onsen (Hot Springs): Traditional Japanese Spa
History of Onsen

Japanese people are known to be an onsen-loving nation since old times.
In literature written in the 700s, onsen was already referred to, which tells you how much onsen has been familiar to Japanese since long ago.  Monks and warlords in those times of civil wars used onsen to heal their diseases and wounds.
Even nowadays, statistics shows that the majority of domestic trips are to visit onsen on the average of one night per person annually.  Although their purposes have been changed from “cure” and “therapy” to “sightseeing,” there are approximately 3000 onsens in Japan, competing with each other showing their own characteristics.

Cure: Traditional Spa Style in Japan

Toji (hot spring cure) was a common practice among farmers and fishermen where they heal their bodies during slow seasons in preparation for busy seasons.  They practised “three rounds of toji (one round is approximately one week),” where they would stay at onsen for two-three weeks, taking water and having anma therapy.  This spa core was practised up until the World War II and is no longer seen as their lifestyle has changed.

What Is Onsen?

Onsen is defined as warm water, mineral water and vapour as well as other gases excluding natural gas springing from the earth.

Today’s Onsen

As types of onsen tour have shifted fro group tours right during and after Japan’s economic high growth period to a relaxed and slower individual one, people’s way of thinking toward tours and how to spend their leisure time has completely changed, and onsen resorts and inns have entered a new era.
The relaxation effects of bathing in onsen water are important for the mind and body.
Hoshinoya Karuizawa opened in July 2005, it  is an onsen inn based on zen concept of “regulating the mind, breath and body.”  It offers several programmes that help regulate the mind, respiration and body, release stress and recuperate the five senses that tend to be lost in urban life in the midst of Karuizawa’s rich nature.

This Is the Japanese Spa
Products to be used are as much as possible of Japanese origin, while Japanese traditional therapies including Shiatsu, Anma, Acupuncutre and Reiki are incorporated as well.

“This massage, as taught by Micheline Arcier, works so well on all clients—male, female, old and young, and I would be sorry if the technique was lost.  I have taught my students to keep this massage unchanged and to allow the original to live on with perhaps a small adjustment on the shoulder and neck area, to increase relief of tension and stress created by 21st century life styles.”

Lecture Summary

The skin is the interface between the external and internal environment of the body.  Therefore, while the skin’s function is under the control of both external and internal environment, it maintains its homeostasis.  Through recent research, it has been found that information input externally is processed by the skin’s ingenious mechanisms, which controls inside and outside of the skin.  Skin’s sensory information is conveyed to the brain and received as skin sensations, while it also affects the autonomic nervous functions as well as the endocrine ones.  In the mean time, it is well acknowledged through experience in life as well as proved in experiments that mental stress can lead to a disturbance of cutaneous functions.  Stimulation through hands-on touch during skin care treatment is also known to reduce stress.  In the same way, certain types of olfactory ingredients that are inseparable from skin care treatment are also proved to have stress reduction effects and work on suppressing stress-related reactions on the skin.  It is important to treat the skin externally in order to maintain its functions to be healthy and sound.  In addition, care through the general system is also important.

Lecture Summary

For some, there has been little to no evidence of what is said to be ‘tough times’, where others have experienced it directly. Forcasters predict we still haven’t seen the worst.

We can choose of course; to take on board the negative talk and expect to ride tough times, or to put a more positive spin on the current economic issues that face us. What we can’t do is be completely unprepared and do nothing, be complacent, paralyzed into inaction.

While it may not be easy navigating your way through a challenging economy, it is certainly possible. There are clear directives to take to continue the success of our business and some great new opportunities continually opening up to us all if we can identify them and respond with speed and efficiency.

It’s essential that you attend this presentation and hear the ideas shared to help you direct your course effectively.
