About Hiroshima
With six beautiful rivers flowing through it, Hiroshima is called the City of Water. It is most famous for its devastating atomic bomb attack in 1945, but the City has achieved a remarkable recovery from that devastation. Surrounded by sea and mountains, Hiroshima is amongst most beautiful cities in Japan, with two UNESCO World Cultural Heritages: The A-Bomb Dome and Itsukushima Shinto Shrine.
Sightseeing
Miyajima
Miyajima is a small island less than an hour outside the city of Hiroshima. Miyajima is most famous for its giant torii gate, which at high tide seems to float on top of the water. The sight is ranked as one of Japan's three best views.
While officially named Itsukushima, the island is more commonly referred to as Miyajima, Japanese for "shrine-island". This is because the island is so closely related to its shrine, Itsukushima Shrine, in the public's mind. Like the torii gate, the shrine's main buildings are built over water.
There are wild deer on the island that have become accustomed to people. In the day the deer wander around the same sites as the tourists, and in the evening they sleep along the walking paths.
Kintai-kyo Bridge
The Kintai-kyo Bridge is a historical wooden arch bridge, in the city of Iwakuni, in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The wooden bridge was built in 1673 without the use of any nails, spanning the beautiful Nishiki River in a series of five wooden arches. The bridge is located on the foot of Mt.Yokoyama, at the top of which lies Iwakuni Castle. The bridge has been Iwakuni’s most distinguished landmark and a subject of admiration for hundreds of years.
Etajima
The Etajima Island and Hiroshima Bay area is an island area comprised with Etajima and Nomijima Islands and their surrouding dotted islands in the south of Hiroshima City. The specialties are marine products including oysters and citruses including mandarin oranges. The beautiful scenery of small and large islands is a must in the Seto Inland Sea.
Sake Breweries in Saijo (Higashihiroshima City)
There are many sake breweries in Saijo, one of the towns in Japan famous for the production of sake. Eight different Japanese sake breweries are located near the JR Saijo Station, an area that is home to white-walled warehouses and fifteen redbrick smokestacks. The scent of Japanese sake wafts faintly throughout the area during the brewing season from October through March.
At each sake brewery, visitors will be able to take a tour of the facilities, sample some Japanese sake and the well water used for the brewing process (very important for brewing), and there are related goods on sale. There are also English-speaking tour guides available (a reservation is required, as well as a fee).
