With the aim of achieving the target of "increasing the share of women in leadership positions to at least 30% by 2020 in all fields in our society", numerical targets for women's participation were set in the Third Basic Plan for Gender Equality for a wide range of fields, including politics, national and local civil services, private sectors, education and research by Japanese Government.
Currently, the proportion of women doctors in clinician is about 20%, and 30% of medical graduates were women in 2017. In future, the number of female physicians will increased, and it is no longer a dream to reach 30%. Cardiology continues to be one of the fields with lowest proportion of women (5.9%) of medical specialty; 2.2% in surgery and 1.7% in neurosurgery, especially in academic settings.
In cardiovascular-related societies there has been few established mentorship or network among female physicians, which is crucial for academic achievement. We plan to discuss the efforts or plans that each society has been making to achieve “202030” in this session.
