| Message from the President |

Tohru Sugimoto
President
Department of Pediatrics Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine |
We are greatly pleased to be hosting The 110th Annual Meeting of the Japan Pediatric Society.
The JPS has played an important role in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of pediatric diseases; the development of advanced health care; and the improvement of the Quality of Life of affected children. It is worth noting that Japan has finally marked the great achievement of having the world's greatest average longevity and the world's lowest infant mortality rate.
Modern pediatric medicine has expanded beyond its conventional scope; today, it encompasses fetal and perinatal health care, adolescent medicine, and developmental medicine. In fact, the current motto of the JPS is “Pediatricians will care for children until they reach adulthood.” In our current practice, we must also deal with emergency medicine and problems arising from various social issues such as child abuse, Japan's declining birthrate, the aging of our population, and mental stress affecting the nuclear family. Moreover, the burden on pediatricians has increased due to the declining number of pediatricians, the requirements of emergency medicine, the diverse demands of pediatrics, and the induction of postgraduate clinical resident courses.
In order to improve this situation, the Japan Pediatric Society has been aggressively addressing the reform of pediatric medical systems and institutions. In addition, we are promoting intercultural communication, international rapprochement, and international collaboration as a result of globalization. At the same time, we are counteracting the negative impact on children of changes in the global environment. As part of this effort, we have devised the following program for the 110th Annual Meeting, which is titled as "The Achievements of Pediatrics and Prospects for Future Advances."
Pediatrics has been referred to as “3Ds”, or in other words, “difficult, dirty and dangerous”. I hope this Annual Meeting will contribute in some small way towards its “re-branding” as "3Cs”: “challenging, cherishable and cheerful”. I am sure that with your support, it will prove to be a fruitful undertaking. I look forward to meeting you all amidst the verdant surroundings of Kyoto. |
