Joji Mochida, M.D., Ph.D.

It is my great honor to invite you to the 25th Annual Research Meeting of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) to be held at Kyoto International Conference Center, Kyoto, Japan, from October 14th to 15th, 2010.

Learning the latest scientific information and concepts from basic research is essential for our orthopaedic surgeons. The Annual Research Meeting in Japan, established in 1986, has played an important role in interconnecting the orthopaedic basic science to orthopaedic clinical medicine. Japanese orthopaedic surgeons are proud to have been involved with many of the fundamental questions answered from research projects in basic science.

2010 is the final year of "Bone and Joint Decade", therefore, it also is a very good opportunity to discuss the advancement in orthopaedic science over the past 10 years along with scope for the future of the orthopaedic basic research. More than 2000 orthopaedic surgeons and their colleagues are expected to join both from Japan and overseas in a variety of interesting programs including 13 topics such as: 1)Translational basic research for the new therapeutic strategy in the musculoskeletal disorders -Development during the last 10 years and future perspectives-, 2) The benefits and risks of regenerative medicine with undifferentiated multi-potent cells for treating musculoskeletal disorders, 3) Drug discovery and development for musculoskeletal disorders -up to date-, 4) Basic research for new insights in the treatment of fractures, 5) Mechanical stress for cell metabolism of musculoskeletal tissue, etc.

Furthermore, immediately following the JOA research meeting, "The 7th Combined Meeting of Orthopaedic Research Societies" will be scheduled at the same venue. Therefore, this is an exceptional occasion for you to enjoy the two large and interesting meetings on orthopaedic basic science.

Kyoto is the old capital in Japan and has characteristics of tranquility and beauty. I believe all attendees can enjoy the program and experience Japanese modern technology in basic science with the contrasted traditional Japanese culture in Kyoto.
I look forward to seeing all of you in Kyoto.
Sincerely,
