The Port of Nagoya
The Port of Nagoya opened in 1907. Initially, Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya City maintained their own piers, channels and other facilities. However, in 1951, the prefecture and the city jointly established the Nagoya Port Authority. Since then, the Authority has been exclusively in charge of construction, administration and management of the Port.
Located at the center of Japan, the Port of Nagoya has a vast land area (42.1 million square meters) and water area (82.2 million square meters) extending over four cities and one village, namely, Nagoya, Tokai, Chita, Yatomi and Tobishima. With shipping routes to about 150 countries around the world, it has steadily grown as a gateway to Central Japan and is now the country's largest international trading port. The Port's hinterland, Central Japan, is home to world-leading manufacturing industries such as automobiles, industrial machinery, aerospace, steel, and electric appliances.
The Port of Nagoya has ranked first in Japan for eight consecutive years in terms of total cargo throughput and for eleven consecutive years in terms of export value. In 2009, cargo throughput reached 164 million tons while the value of exports reached 6.767 trillion yen.
Today, we are committed to increasing its international competitiveness as a Super Hub Port by improving facilities and providing more cost-competitive services, in order to offer strong support for physical distribution in Central Japan which excels in manufacturing.
Around the Port of Nagoya, several improvement projects are under way, such as further development of the Central Japan International Airport and the regional highway network including the Shin-Tomei Expressway, Shin-Meishin Expressway, and Nagoya Loop Line No. 2.
Taking advantage of its superior geographical location with great access to land, sea and air transportation, the Port of Nagoya has long been growing together with the local manufacturing industries. It continues to play a key role in stimulating both the national and local economies.
Note: The presidency for the administrative body alternates every two years between the Mayor of Nagoya City and the Governor of Aichi Prefecture.
