President of the 45th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Fracture Repair
Masahiro Shirahama MD., Ph.D.
Professor and Director of Orthopaedic Traumatology
Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery, Kurume University School of Medicine
The 45th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Fracture Repair (JSFR) will be held over two days, Friday, June 28 and Saturday, June 29, 2019 at the Fukuoka International Congress Center and Fukuoka Sunpalace Hotel and Hall. It is a great honor to organize this long-established Annual Meeting, and I feel great responsibility for the mission of advancing fracture treatment in Japan.

The theme of this Annual Meeting is "Artistry and Function." We have inherited many wonderful therapeutic techniques and fixation devices from the wisdom and experience of our predecessors, and these have been improved and have come into general use.

In Japan, the working-age population continues to decline and the proportion of elderly people increases. Young patients need to return to normal life and work as soon as possible, while the elderly need to live independently without requiring long-term care. Early post-traumatic functional recovery depends on the proficiency of fracture treatment, and for orthopedic surgeons, the ultimate goal is to ensure early and complete functional recovery. Osteosynthesis techniques have recently become practical and one aim of the meeting is to recommend safe and reliable fracture treatments to gain esthetically pleasing outcomes for everyone.

Although artistry and functionality may appear to be unrelated, artistically beautiful work also incorporates excellent functionality. I hope this Annual Meeting will advance the care of fracture repair to contribute to the health of as many members of the public as possible.

We have invited several well-known speakers from overseas: Professor Dana C. Mears from the USA, Professor Peter Giannoudis from the UK, both of whom are experts in pelvic fractures, and Professor Cong-Feng Luo (an expert in tibial plateau fractures) and Dr. Qu Long (an expert in bone regeneration) from China.

The city of Fukuoka is centrally located and offers easy access from both Japan and overseas. As a gateway to East Asia, the number of foreign visitors has been greatly increasing in recent years. It is famous not only for its culinary culture, including ramen noodles and street food, but also for its historical sites, which include Dazaifu Tenmangu, the country's main shrine to the deity of learning, and Munakata Taisha, three Shinto shrines that together form a World Heritage site. I look forward to welcoming you here.
