Theme: Beyond the Turning Point: A New Era for Hypertension Science
— Advancing Real-World Implementation through Lifestyle Modification, Prevention, and Digital Innovation —
I am pleased to announce that the 49th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Japanese Society of Hypertension (JSH) will be held for three days from November 12 (Friday) to 14 (Sunday), 2027 at the Fukuoka International Congress Center in Fukuoka City.

Fukuoka City has a long history of developing as a hub of interactions, both domestic and international, and now enjoys prosperity as a vibrant metropolis that attracts people with diverse backgrounds and offers a variety of information through exchanges with Asia and beyond. The city also boasts sophisticated urban functions coupled with an abundant natural environment, and draws attention as a center for creating new values and innovations: here, various new initiatives are underway in the fields of medical care, digital technology and startup support, which makes Fukuoka City an ideal place to host the forthcoming JSH Annual Scientific Meeting that is themed on “real-world implementation” of research results in hypertension science. It is my great pleasure to welcome many of you to Fukuoka.

Hypertension is one of the major lifestyle-related diseases which still affects about one out of three Japanese people. It is also the most prevalent risk factor of many cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, heart failure, coronary artery disease and renal failure. Despite this fact, there are many patients who have undiagnosed or uncontrolled hypertension or who have discontinued hypertension treatment. Overcoming hypertension is an essential part of our endeavor to extend healthy lifespan and prevent cardiovascular diseases.

Today, hypertension science is at a significant turning point. This situation is often termed a “crisis for hypertension science,” due to lack of progress in developing new antihypertensive drugs, hindering the improvement of treatment outcomes. On the other hand, this crisis marks the beginning of a new era, which offers a wider range of options for controlling hypertension than ever before, including: promoting lifestyle modifications; expanding preventive medicine; encouraging home-based blood pressure management; using digital health and AI technologies; and working in collaboration with community healthcare facilities and governmental agencies. In this new era, we are required to share research results in hypertension science community-wide, not only among healthcare professionals, to facilitate the “real-world implementation” of these results.

Under the theme of “Beyond the Turning Point: A New Era for Hypertension Science — Advancing Real-World Implementation through Lifestyle Modification, Prevention, and Digital Innovation —,” the 49th JSH Annual Scientific Meeting will address a variety of topics ranging from basic research and clinical practice to preventive medicine, public health, digital health and medical policy, while bringing together diverse stakeholders, as well as healthcare professionals and researchers, to facilitate in-depth discussions on the future of hypertension treatment and the creation of a healthy society.

We hope that the forthcoming meeting will help pave a path to the future through a scientific approach and make our future vision a reality through passion, so that we can share new knowledge and expand the collaborative network nationwide from Fukuoka to open up a new era for hypertension science.

We heartily look forward to seeing you in Fukuoka.
