【Important】 Announcing the postponement of the 36th Annual Meeting of Japanese Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (JSPEN2021)

Due to the continued spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) throughout the world, the committee of the 36th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (JSPEN2021) scheduled on February 18th and 19th, 2021 had made a decision once to fully cancel the onsite meeting in the Kobe venue and to shift the format to a completely online meeting. However, in this case, JSPEN would not hold an on-site meeting for two years in succession, which means we will lose the opportunity for interaction between participants. In addition, there are concerns about the further spread and continuation of the COVID-19, and many of the medical professionals will be extremely busy with their medical activities to prevent the spread of infection in February. Therefore, we came to the conclusion that even if it were to be a completely online meeting, it would be difficult for everyone to hold a meaningful academic meeting this February.

After careful deliberation, we have finally decided to postpone the JSPEN2021 to July 21st and 22nd, 2021 in Portopia Hotel in Kobe, while retaining the format of holding the “hybrid meeting” (a combination of onsite and online meeting) which was originally planned. We plan to hold the meeting under this format on the new dates, but there is a possibility that we may have to proceed to hold a completely online meeting, depending on the social situation in July. We hope that the situation will improve and enable us to have beneficial opportunities for attendees to interact face-to-face in Kobe.

Regardless of this postponement, the original program of the JSPEN2021 will be in place and it is our intention to maintain as much of it as possible within the new dates. However, we would appreciate your understanding of the fact that it is subject to change depending on the venue circumstances.
Now, we are working quickly on reviewing the schedules and adjusting the venue. We would be grateful if you would visit and check the JSPEN2021 website for the latest announcements. We will keep you updated on the website as well as via email.

Again, the JSPEN 2021 meeting on February 18th and 19th has been postponed, and all of the online and onsite programs originally scheduled in February are CANCELLED. We have temporarily closed the participation registration and postponed the submission period of the presentation videos for the online sessions. For the speakers who will not be able to attend on July 21st and 22nd, please kindly let us know. We will contact you with further information.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and concerns that we have caused to our members who have prepared for the meeting on February 18th and 19th, 2021. We would sincerely appreciate your continued understanding and support.

Update on the 36th Annual Meeting of Japanese Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (JSPEN2021)

Since the start of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the outlook nationwide still remains unclear. After careful deliberation, we have decided that the 36th Annual Meeting of Japanese Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (JSPEN2021) will still be held in Kobe next year, but as a “hybrid meeting” that also enables attendees to take part online from their home or workplace. This format means that participants who are unable to join the meeting in Kobe will still be able to give and view presentations.

Many medical staff members are still facing great pressure at work as they deal with the spread of COVID-19, and many institutions do not have the capacity to permit business trips or other travel. It is also currently Japanese government policy to impose restrictions on large-scale events such as our JSPEN2021. As JSPEN2021 will be held in winter, further waves may occur even if the pandemic temporarily abates, and the outlook for that period is still completely unclear. Influenza is always a concern at this time of year, and it is highly unlikely that the state of affairs will improve sufficiently for us to be able to safely welcome participants to Kobe in February. Although it is a great shame that clinical professionals working in nutrition therapy will be unable to gather in large numbers both this year and next, in light of our social responsibility as an organization of medical professionals, we hope that our members will understand the judgment to which we have reluctantly come.

In practice, we have reviewed the conference program and may reduce some sessions to be held in person, while adding online sessions. The Portopia Hotel in Kobe will be the sole in-person venue, but by taking part of the program entirely online we will be able to hold as many sessions as possible as live broadcasts. By also adding sessions that could not have been held in Kobe, we intend to create as many opportunities for discussion as possible by uploading selected presentations to the JSPEN2021 Meeting Archive, which will be available for on-demand streaming for some time after the Annual Meeting. Of course, if it becomes completely impossible to hold JSPEN2021 in Kobe, the only option may be to take the entire Annual Meeting online at short notice.

Under these circumstances, our seminars for certification, which in normal years are held during the Annual Meeting, cannot be held in person in Kobe. In light of the results of the online versions held this year, we are now discussing how best to hold these seminars in 2021. The questions of issuing credits for participation in the Annual Meeting and the conditions under which credit may be given are also still under consideration.

The theme of JSPEN2021 is “Learn from the Past for the Present and Future of Nutrition Therapy.” Although this was unplanned, while the activities of the JSPEN have run into some difficulties since the Society’s name change, we hope that next year’s JSPEN2021 will provide a new model for thinking about how to hold academic conferences in the COVID-19 era. Given that the difficulties of holding conferences with in-person participation are unlikely to be dispelled in the near future, we are making every effort to ensure that the Annual Meeting can be held in a meaningful way, enabling both the dissemination of research results and the lively exchange of information to the greatest extent possible.

The latest information on the dates and format of the Annual Meeting and seminars, as well as on credit for participation and related matters, will be published on the JSPEN website and the Annual Meeting website and emailed to all members as the information becomes available. Please check for updates regularly.

I and my colleagues greatly appreciate your continued understanding and support.
