※What is Program for Leading Graduate Schools?
Supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Program for Leading Graduate Schools assists university graduate schools of the highest caliber to institute degree programs that are recognized as top quality around the world and that create continuity between master’s and doctoral programs to implement curricula that overarches fields of specialization. To foster excellent students who are highly creative, internationally attuned, have a broader perspective and will play leading roles in the academic, industrial and governmental sectors across the globe, the program brings top ranking faculty and students together from both in and outside Japan and enlists participation from academic, industrial and governmental sectors. The following three programs were selected from Kyushu University, where we provide distinctive education programs.
Graduate Education and Research Training Program in Decision Science for a Sustainable Society【All-around category】
(Outline) Human society is facing a serious problem of the sustainability of the global environment and civilized society. We are being pressed to make many decisions regarding a number of problems including climate change, globalization of the market, and rapid increase in population. Next generation of global leaders will need to possess different kinds of knowledge in tackling the problems of the future world: disciplinary knowledge within particular subject areas (world-acclaimed research performance); a broad range of interdisciplinary knowledge of sustainability; and new forms of transdisciplinary knowledge to integrate the results of disciplinary and interdisciplinary science for decision making. Those leaders will also require practical skills, which will include the ability to carry out research proposals in the international society, to persuade people by giving clear presentations, and to provide inspired leadership to organize and promote collaborative works for the solution of the problems.
In order to meet these demands, this program provides graduate students with a 5-year integrated curriculum that gives them the opportunity to acquire three kinds of knowledge (disciplinary, interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary) and four types of practical skills (international prepared ness, research proposals, presentations, leadership).
Development of Global Research Leaders in Molecular Systems for Devices and Establishment of an International Education and Research Center【Composite category (Materials)】
(Outline) In order to contribute to the formation of unrivalled next-generation core industries by building up advanced molecular systems for devices, industry-government-academia collaborative research teams have formed and global leaders will be nurtured so that they are capable not only of proceeding proactively with high-level research in advanced molecular materials science, but also of taking an active leadership role in the international community, developing also a broad perspective over a wide range of science and technology fields. In addition, we aim to produce talented students who can deepen their expertise through high-level research and development and have a comprehensive understanding on research management, intellectual property rights, management policy, and international strategy, etc. Although scientists tend to have closed thinking because highly logical thinking and careful consideration are required in the science and technology research, those who have a good personality and play a leading role maintain a balance between passions and reason, always be open-minded and ready to face challenges. This education program aims to train super leaders who will be able to work internationally with a pioneering spirit towards the research and development as well as the ability to see bigger picture, while boosting the scientific potential of researchers particularly in the field of “molecular system devices”. Super leaders will be trained in integrated research and development from basic research through practical application by acquiring the knowledge of “cutting-edge molecular system devices”, “enthusiasm and expressive ability in relation to research”, “research management ability” and “international outlook”.
Advanced Graduate Program in Global Strategy for Green Asia【Composite category (Environment)】
(Outline) This educational program aims to cultivate leaders in science and technology who can contribute to the realization of an Asia where ecology and economic growth can coexist. Human society is facing a difficult task of how to make the drastic reduction in the resource consumption compatible with economic growth. Since Asia is a melting pot of diverse social and cultural structures and it is also a vigorous region with fast paced economic development, it has the potential to serve as a model region. To avoid resource and environmental constraints that attribute to the mass consumption of fossil resources while achieving a sustainable economic development, an unprecedented growth strategy is required to reconcile the reduction in resource consumption with an increase in GDP. In this century, with the ever-widening gap between rich and poor, disadvantages of globalization being apparent, the rapid rise of energy consumption in Asia, and the fossil resources price hike, what Japan should contribute to is a realization of a Green Asia by providing a global model, which distinguishes from the Western-centric model. Global Strategy for Green Asia aims to realize a Green Asia in a moderate manner in principle where we seek sustainable and autonomous growth of the society, industry and economy in consideration of the history and culture of each country in Asia and Oceania regions, and at the same time, in a determined manner by forming a strong global network so that synergistic effect of ecology and economic growth can be produced.
※What is Kyushu University Platform of Inter/Transdisciplinary Energy Research?
It is an organization of the all-Kyushu University platform consisting of energy researchers from natural science to social sciences and humanities for the purpose of realizing an ideal energy in the society in 2100. By merging the areas of research of primary and secondary energy and policy recommendations, this platform designs a new concept for future energy systems to generate a paradigm shift in energy for technology, industry, and society.
In an effort to become a world-class research center for energy, we promote joint research and exchanges with researchers and students of multiple leading universities around the world. Researchers including the faculties of humanities and sociology and science and technology proceed with projects that will lead to practical applications of their research. In addition, Future Energy Science will be created by all researchers and students involved, through participation and collaboration, the results of which will be reflected in education programs to develop researchers who will play a vital role in the future.
