It is a great honor to announce that the 114th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Pathology will be held in Sendai, the home of Tohoku University.

The meeting will be held over the three-day period of Thursday, April 17 to Saturday, April 19, 2025. This is the lovely season when Sendai, known as the “City of Trees,” will just be shifting from the pink of cherry blossom to the green of young leaves. The venue will be Sendai International Center, nestled among the hills of Aobayama and conveniently accessed by a direct subway ride from Sendai Station.

As the theme of the 114th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Pathology, I have chosen the title “Opening New Doors in Pathology.” I would like to give this conference a fresh feel by including groundbreaking new content.

The purpose of pathological research is to investigate cells, organs, and individuals that are in a diseased state to find out about the mechanisms of disease onset and progression and obtain useful information for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. However, the nature of this information has been greatly transformed by the development of analysis technology. Our greatest advantage as pathologists is that we can directly analyze tissues and individuals that have actually been attacked by disease, and the “real thing,” with its infinite capacity for generating discoveries, is always in front of us. The potential value of both discoveries based on small insights during diagnosis and those based on large-scale omics analysis is limitless, including their capacity for development, and I hope we will all elucidate the details of such new discoveries together.

This Annual Meeting will include over 30 symposia and workshops on specific themes. Submissions are invited for a number of these sessions, and I look forward to receiving your applications. The lectures, presentations, and discussions at the Annual Meeting will all take place face-to-face at the venue, but the Diagnostic Systemic Pathology Seminar, Diagnostic Organ Pathology Seminar, and Autopsy Diagnostic Seminar offered as board certification training and continuing professional development will be available online by streaming on demand for the convenience of attendees. The Lectures in Advanced Molecular Pathology will be held face-to-face on-site but will also be available by streaming on demand.

Sendai is a compact city with an abundance of local tourist attractions and has good transport links, including a Shinkansen station, a direct railway line from the airport, and a subway system. I intend to make this an enjoyable meeting for everyone who attends, and look forward to meeting as many as possible of you there.
