The 130th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Ophthalmological Society
Welcome Message

The 130th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Ophthalmological Society
Chair of the Program Committee
Takahiro Hiraoka, M.D., Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, Institute of Medicine, University of Tsukuba)
On behalf of the Program Committee, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations on the convening of the milestone 130th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Ophthalmological Society in Hakata, Fukuoka, a gateway to Asia. This venue is most fitting for this meeting, which embraces globalization as one of its central pillars. I am confident that this year’s meeting will distinguish itself from previous ones, with original ideas and innovations thoughtfully incorporated throughout. I would also like to express my sincere respect and gratitude to President Dr. Koh—Hei Sonoda, the Secretary General, all the doctors involved, as well as the Department of Ophthalmology at Kyushu University, the Alumni Association, the Fukuoka Ophthalmologists Association, and the Secretariat for their tremendous efforts.

The theme of this meeting is“A dreamy gaze.”Rather than this theme being a mere slogan, the Program Committee has drawn up the program by carefully considering the“dreams”and future visions within each specialized field. It is the Committee’s hope that through this meeting all delegates will sense the bright future of ophthalmology, be inspired toward new research themes and their chosen paths, and gain positive energy.

The Annual Meeting of the Japanese Ophthalmological Society has consistently hosted the International Symposium and the International Crosstalk Symposium by Young Ophthalmologists(ICS)as part of its ongoing commitment to promoting globalization. In addition to these established initiatives, the 130th meeting will newly introduce a Late Breaking Symposium as one of its main highlights. For this special session, we are pleased to invite several world—leading researchers:Prof. Darius M. Moshfeghi, Prof. Rajesh C. Rao, Dr. Yih—Shiou Hwang, and Prof. Ching— Yu Cheng. Two sessions of the Japan—China—Korea Joint Symposium are also planned, and we hope that they will foster lively, cross—border discussions on shared challenges and future prospects for East Asia.

For overseas researchers, particularly those from developing Asian countries, the burden of travel and accommodation expenses remains high;it is not easy for them to submit an abstract and attend the meeting. The 130th meeting has addressed this challenge head—on by establishing the largest—ever travel grant program for international delegates, providing up to 1,000 US dollars per person for up to 30 recipients. This initiative symbolizes President Sonoda’s strong commitment to promoting globalization. As a result, the number of general presentations registered exceeded 600, with some 100 submitted from overseas. The fact that one in six general presentations will be delivered in English demonstrates that this meeting is becoming a true forum for international academic exchange.

Furthermore, to foster the next generation, we have actively created opportunities for young researchers and clinicians to play leading roles in this meeting. We have intentionally appointed junior members as speakers and chairpersons in the symposiums, and, in addition to the ICS, we have organized the Young Ophthalmologists Committee Symposium“, This Symposium This Symposium Changes Your Game! ― Visionary Young Researchers Shaping the Future with Global Strategies”We will also hold Hot Topics sessions, based on the VIP session that was so popular at the 79th Annual Congress of Japan Clinical Ophthalmology. Towenty—one general presentations that received particularly high peer—review ratings will be selected and organized into four sessions for in—depth discussion. One of these sessions will be conducted in English and will showcase outstanding research findings from Asia, with presentations given exclusively by overseas speakers.

The venue layout and allocation of time have also been carefully considered to ensure that academic discussions can flow naturally. The meeting is designed to make effective use of two venues:the Fukuoka International Congress Center and Marine Messe Fukuoka to minimize travel and enable oral presentations, exhibitions and discussions to proceed seamlessly in sequence. In particular, the academic exhibitions adopt the ARVO format, which emphasizes discussion and fosters an atmosphere where delegates can exchange opinions freely, regardless of their age or position. Wine and cheese will be served in the evening, and we warmly encourage you to visit the exhibition venue.

The Program Committee sincerely hopes that this meeting’s program will inspire each delegate to reflect on the future of their own research and clinical practice and serve as a driving force behind their next challenge, as well as providing opportunities to gain new knowledge. We look forward to engaging in lively discussions with many of you in Hakata, Fukuoka.

Although this message is somewhat long, the meeting will surely be fascinating. We warmly invite you to join us at the venue and fully enjoy the meeting along with the vibrant spring atmosphere of Hakata.
