                                | |
                                | I am pleased to announce that the University of Miyazaki will host the 14th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Acute Care Surgery from September 30th to October 1st, 2022 in Aoshima, Miyazaki City. The meeting will again be held in Kyushu like the 13th meeting, but this time on the east coast, with exceptional views of the sunrise over the Pacific Ocean. I believe that it will provide a great opportunity for healthcare professionals in the acute care surgery and emergency fields across the country to refresh themselves. I look forward to welcoming you by the seaside this autumn.
The Japanese Society for Acute Care Surgery specializes in emergency medicine, particularly in surgery in internal diseases, trauma and disaster settings. The meeting will bring together surgeons, emergency physicians, anesthesiologists and radiologists, as well as acute care nurses and medical staff, to actively discuss a variety of topics at this annual event. I believe that the Department of Surgery at the University of Miyazaki was selected to host this meeting due to the nationally recognized accomplishments of emergency surgeons and their tireless efforts at the Emergency and Critical Care Center, which was established in 2012 under the leadership of Prof. Hidenobu Ochiai. Healthcare professionals at the University of Miyazaki and Miyazaki Prefecture have continued to practice disaster response in preparation for the Nankai Trough earthquake and tsunami, and to prepare on a daily basis for the possibility of severe trauma caused by disasters and terrorism.

The theme of the meeting was created by combining the old word “有事即應 (immediate response to an emergency)” which was highlighted by the Covid-19 pandemic, and the slogan “the sooner, the better” which was chosen based on reforms to work styles and safety in modern medicine. The Department of Surgery serves as a role model for community medicine. I am proud that our community acute care surgery has been improved by reforms to the macro-chair system since I was appointed as Professor a few years ago. In line with the theme of the meeting, we will invite speaker to give special lecture related to “Damage Control.” A program on emergency hemostasis is also planned.

I do hope that the meeting will help attendees to refresh themselves by visiting the sacred sites around the venue, engaging in various outdoor sports, and enjoying the outstanding food from both land and sea during the Ise-ebi lobster festival, as well as through active discussions. I will work alongside Prof.  Ochiai at the Division of Emergency Medicine and staff members at the University of Miyazaki to ensure that the meeting, which attracts national attention, runs smoothly and to advance acute care surgery in Japan.

We look forward to welcoming you all.

                                | |
                                | It is our great honor to host the 14th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Acute Care Surgery at Miyazaki, the sunniest place in Japan, under the leadership of Chairman Prof. Atsushi Nanashima, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, University of Miyazaki.
I am based in the Emergency and Critical Care Center at the University of Miyazaki Hospital, and as an emergency physician, I am involved in the assessment and treatment of surgical emergencies including torso trauma and work closely with surgeons. I am deeply privileged to serve as Vice-chairman of the meeting and will do my utmost to support the Chairman to make it a success.

I think that in the field of acute care surgery, cooperation between acute care surgeons and emergency physicians is particularly important since most diseases encountered in the field require emergency surgery. Needless to say, patients with severe torso trauma and hemorrhagic shock have no time to spare and their lives cannot be saved without close cooperation between emergency physicians performing resuscitation and general care and acute care physicians to stop bleeding. Therefore, the challenge in improving the survival rates of such patients is to develop systems which allow surgeons and emergency physicians to work together smoothly to provide treatment. As well as developing close working relationships, I think that nurturing physicians with dual boarding in surgery and emergency medicine is important. Here in Miyazaki, under close cooperation between Prof. Nanashima’s Acute Care Surgery Team and the Emergency and Critical Care Center, the prognosis of severe torso trauma patients has improved significantly compared with before the launch of the Center at the University of Miyazaki Hospital. We are also training physicians to achieve dual boarding in surgery and emergency medicine. We look forward to discussions which will foster increased cooperation between surgeons and emergency physicians in order to improve survival rates of critically ill patients requiring urgent care, as well as those on surgical techniques.

I hope that the 14th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Acute Care Surgery will be a great success and useful to all.
