Greetings

I am Yasuo Terauchi, Professor, Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Yokohama City University Graduate School of Medicine. It is my great privilege to serve as the President of the 70th Annual Meeting of the Japan Diabetes Society. This milestone meeting will take place from May 21 (Friday) to May 23 (Sunday), 2027, at Tokyo International Forum and JP Tower Hall & Conference.
We began preparations in January 2025 and launched the official website in June 2026. We are working diligently to ensure that the meeting provides a valuable opportunity for scientific exchange and collaboration. I sincerely look forward to your participation.

Throughout my career, I have devoted myself to advancing diabetes care while working to elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which genetic and environmental factors interact to cause and exacerbate diabetes, using model animal models that we have developed. At Yokohama City University, I have been committed to training the next generation of diabetes clinicians and researchers. As President of the Japan Society of Experimental Diabetes and Obesity, I have worked to promote the growth of basic diabetes research in Japan. In addition, in my roles as President of the CDEJ Certification Organization and Representative Director of the Japanese Society for the Art and Science of Diabetes Care, I have continued to share perspectives on team-based care, the ideal relationship between healthcare professionals and people with diabetes, the emotional challenges faced by people with diabetes, and the role of medicine and healthcare within society.

These experiences have strengthened my belief that diabetes research must go beyond basic and clinical science to include efforts that view life from the perspective of people with diabetes, their families, and society, to realize a richer, more fulfilling way of living. Without efforts to realize “Well-Being”—a life rich in mind and body, supported by a compassionate society—true progress in diabetes care cannot be achieved.

With this conviction, I have chosen “Diabetology Connecting Mind, Body, and Society” as the theme of the Annual Meeting. I have expressed this vision in the introductory video for the meeting, and I warmly invite you to watch it. I sincerely hope that many colleagues will join us in shaping the future of diabetology together.

To realize Well-Being—a life enriched in mind, body, and social connection—from the perspectives of patients, families, and society, it is essential that academic societies, government, citizens, and the business community work together. On the final day of the Annual Meeting, we are preparing a special program designed to further cultivate this shared momentum.

To bring these visions to life in the years ahead, we have been seeking advice and insights not only from members of our department but also from many colleagues across diverse fields. With this collective wisdom, we aim to create a meeting that will remain in the hearts of all who attend.

Finally, it is my sincere hope that in the fresh greenery of Marunouchi in Tokyo, physicians, healthcare professionals, industry partners, and members of the public will gather, exchange ideas, form new connections, and envision the future together. I truly look forward to welcoming many of you to this meeting that inspires collaboration and shapes the next era of diabetology.
