Katsuro TOMITA, M.D., Ph.D., is at present, the COE of Kanazawa Advanced Medical Center in Kanazawa University Hospital Campus, He had been a Professor and the Chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Kanazawa University from 1989 to 2010 (for 21 years), After his retirement, he has been the Emeritus Professor of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Kanazawa University, Japan.

Dr. Tomita’s major area of orthopedic specialty is “Spine Tumor Surgery” and “Bone-Tumor-Limb-Salvage Surgery”.
At the AAOS-1994 Annual Meeting, Dr. Tomita firstly introduced “Total En bloc Spondylectomy”, so called “TES”; removing malignant spinal tumor as a whole block according to the oncological surgery concept, with his unique surgical “T-saw” bone-cutting technique. Since then, this concept and technique has been enthusiastically approved world-widely, and he had traveled internationally very actively for many invited lectures (ca.173).
He was also invited for practical surgeries and demonstrations of TES surgery in many countries such as the USA, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Spain, etc.

In addition, he has also developed several original T-saw surgeries including;

  • Total en bloc Spondylectomy (TES)
  • Expansive Midline T-saw Laminoplasty for Cervical Myelopathy
  • 360°Circum-spinal Decompression for Severe Thoracic OPLL Myelopathy
  • Closing-Opening Wedge Spinal Osteotomy to Correct Angular Kyphotic Deformity
  • De-kyphosis correction for thoracic myelopathy
  • Sacral Amputation and Total Sacrectomy
  • Recapping T-saw Laminoplasty for Spinal Cord Tumor Removal
  • Mandibular Splitting Approach by T-saw for C1-2 Tumor Removal and so on.
