Congress Chairperson of the 91st Annual Scientific Meeting of the Japanese Circulation Society
(Professor, Division of Cardiology, Tokai University School of Medicine)

It is a great honor for me to serve as Congress Chairperson of the 91st Annual Scientific Meeting of the Japanese Circulation Society (JCS2027). JCS2027 will be held in conjunction with the Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology Congress (APSC2027), chaired by Dr. Junya Ako, Professor of Kitasato University. I will work closely with him to ensure the success of this joint international event, which will take place over three days from March 26, 2027 at Pacifico Yokohama. While this venue has often been used for the JCS’ annual meeting, it is the first time in its 91-year history for the meeting to be hosted by a university based in Kanagawa Prefecture where Yokohama is located.

The joint theme of JCS2027 and APSC2027 is “Beyond the Wave: The Future of Cardiovascular Medicine.”

This theme represents the determination of the cardiovascular community to overcome difficulties and create a bright future. The term “Beyond the Wave” was inspired by The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai, part of which is featured in the poster of JCS2027. Thought to have been created around 1830, this masterpiece depicts the scene off the coast where Pacifico Yokohama is now located. The poster also features a black ship, a warship led by U.S. Commodore Matthew Perry on his expedition to Japan to force the Tokugawa shogunate to open its ports to foreign ships. Pacifico Yokohama is located near the place where Perry signed the Treaty of Kanagawa with the shogunate during his second expedition to Japan in 1854.

Cardiovascular medicine is a branch of life science that deals directly with people’s lives. There is no end to the pursuit of research and clinical practice in this field, which is stimulating for cardiologists and necessary for society. However, the number of young doctors who choose to specialize in cardiovascular medicine continues to decline, causing serious problems for the JCS and making it imperative for us to take action to improve the work style and treatment of cardiologists. At the forthcoming JCS2027, we aim to facilitate discussions on cardiovascular medicine, explore the pleasure of pursuing this field of study and envision the future that awaits the cardiovascular community from a scientific perspective.

Perhaps each JCS member has their own wave to overcome. I hope that JCS2027 will contribute to the progress of cardiovascular medicine and bring you closer to your future vision as a cardiologist.
