The 10th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Orthopaedic Society of Knee, Arthroscopy, and Sports Medicine (JOSKAS 2018) will be hosted by Tokyo Medical and Dental University. We have put together a fruitful program for this tenth Annual Meeting, which will be held at the Fukuoka Convention Center from Thursday, June 14 to Saturday, June 16, 2018. It is a great honor for me to take on the role of President of the 10th JOSKAS Annual Meeting, and I would like to do my utmost as my final conference president in my carrier.

Arthroscopy was developed as a practical treatment by Masaki Watanabe of Tokyo Teishin Hospital, who is known worldwide as the “Father of Arthroscopy” for his achievements. Its use led to dramatic advances in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, and at the same time it rapidly became internationalized. It is JOSKAS that is driving the development of this trend in Japan as an advanced nation. The International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) is now playing the central role in the internationalization of arthroscopy, and its biennial conferences are always attended by large numbers of participants. JOSKAS must become more aware of its nature as an association spreading the orthopaedic surgical techniques developed in Japan, particularly arthroscopic treatment, throughout the world, and engage actively in internationalization.

To achieve meaningful internationalization it is important to engage in frank discussions without any barriers. We have therefore invited around 20 renowned knee, shoulder, hip, and ankle surgeons from Europe, North America, Asia, and Oceania to JOSKAS 2018. To deepen our relationship with ISAKOS, we have also invited its current President and Vice President, Dr. Marc Safran from the United States and Dr. Willem Mare van der Merwe from South Africa, to attend. Our intention is to broaden the international debate on arthroscopy not only of the knee but also of the shoulder, ankle, and hip.

As JOSKAS 2018 is being held in Fukuoka, I have tried to find an inspired connection with Tokyo Medical and Dental University, which is located in Ochanomizu in Tokyo. Something that immediately sprang to my mind was “plum blossom.” The link is the legend of the flying plum tree of Dazaifu Tenmangu, a famous shrine in Fukuoka, which is connected with Sugawara no Michizane, venerated as Tenjin, the god of learning. Furthermore, plum blossom is the symbol of Yushima Tenjin, a shrine near Ochanomizu, which is famous for its white plum blossom, and is also the logo of Tokyo Medical and Dental University.

For this reason, we have chosen as the conference theme “Bloom your knowledge, liberate your knowledge! JOSKAS 10th Anniversary Meeting.”

It is my undying hope that JOSKAS will continue to develop as an association that is internationally active in freely spreading knowledge about the development of orthopaedic surgery, which has bloomed as a result of arthroscopy. This meeting will be made by those who take part in it. The more actively you take part, the more liberating and fulfilling an experience it will be. Let’s take the opportunity to engage in lively debate that transcends the language barrier!
