Izumi Asahina

The 65th Congress of the Japanese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons will be organized by the Department of Regenerative Oral Surgery in Nagasaki University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. It is a great honor for Nagasaki University to arrange this long-standing Congress for the first time.

The theme of the Congress will be “Serendipity – Encountering New Discoveries.” Although there is no direct Japanese translation of the English word “serendipity,” Japanese Wikipedia defines it as “the occurrence of an unplanned fortunate discovery while searching for something else.” I hope that in this Congress, listening to lectures and presentations that may not be directly related to our own research topics or the issues we face in everyday clinical practice may give us hints that lead to breakthroughs in the issues with which we are wrestling, providing the opportunity for fortunate, accidental encounters as a result.

We have invited Dr. Hitoshi Nakagama, President of the National Cancer Center, to give the Special Lecture on the future prospects for cancer treatment, with a focus on cancer genomic medicine. Professor Yutaka Yatomi, Chair of the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine, has been invited to give the Lecture by the President of a related association. Although the Congress is being organized by Nagasaki University, it will be held in Nagoya. To give it a flavor of Nagasaki, the birthplace of Western medicine in Japan, we have asked Professor Shunichi Yamashita, now Vice-President of Fukushima Medical University, and Professor Kenji Hirayama, Director of the Nagasaki University Institute of Tropical Medicine, to give Educational Lectures on the subjects of radiation disaster medicine and tropical medicine, both of which are specialties of Nagasaki University. From overseas, we have invited Professor Hiromitsu Nakauchi of Stanford University to speak on the subject of the growth of human organs in the bodies of other species and their transplantation, raising new possibilities for regenerative medicine. We have also asked Professor György Sándor of the University of Oulu, who has performed numerous cases of mandibular reconstruction with adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells, to present his clinical work in maxillofacial regenerative medicine. Finally, Professor Rui Fernandes of the University of Florida will describe his outstanding surgical techniques for treating head and neck cancer. We are also planning a large number of symposia that will offer participants opportunities for serendipity.

Although the organizers are based in Nagasaki University, the Congress will be held in Nagoya, right at the center of Japan. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible in the Nagoya Congress Center next November in the Olympic year of 2020.
