I am delighted to be responsible for hosting the 67th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (JSPHO) in Fukuoka from Wednesday, November 19 to Friday, November 21, 2025. This is the fourth time the Department of Pediatric Surgery of Kyushu University has been involved with organizing this Annual Meeting, following the 2nd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Pediatric Oncology (JSPO) (organized by Professor Keiichi Ikeda), the 18th Annual Meeting of the JSPO (organized by Professor Sachiyo Suita), and, following the merger of the JSPO with the Japanese Society of Pediatric Hematology, the 55th Annual Meeting of the JSPHO (organized by Professor Tomoaki Taguchi). It is a great honor to take my turn as the organizer of this longstanding Annual Meeting of the JSPHO.
The theme of this Annual Meeting will be “For the Future of All Children.” Thanks to multimodal therapies (chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy), the prognosis for pediatric cancer is improving and more patients are surviving for longer, but attention is also now focusing on treatment-related harm. I believe that the most important requirement of today’s pediatric cancer treatment is treatment that prioritizes the patient’s quality of life in 20 years’ time, and that rather than just saving lives, all those involved in pediatric cancer treatment throughout Japan need to be trying to provide patients with individually personalized treatment that takes account of what their future will look like, while genuinely caring for those children and their families.
Together with the Program Committee, Professor Yuhki Koga of the Department of Pediatrics of Kyushu Cancer Center, whom I have invited to be the Vice President of this Annual Meeting, and Professor Shingo Ueki of the Department of Health Sciences of Kyushu University Graduate School of Medical Sciences, who is the President of the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Pediatric Oncology Nursing, I will be putting together a program that will enable us to discuss children’s future from an interdisciplinary perspective.
The venue for this Annual Meeting will be the Fukuoka International Congress Center. The entire staff of my department is working on the preparations so that all our members can socialize with each other as much as possible. I hope that many of my predecessors and JSPHO members will be able to attend, and am grateful for your cooperation and support. |
