President of the 54th Annual Meeting of the
Japanese Society for Replacement Arthroplasty

Shuichi Matsuda, MD, PhD

President of the Japanese Society
for Replacement Arthroplasty
Professor, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery,
Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto University

It is a great honor for me to have been appointed as President of the 54th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Replacement Arthroplasty (JSRA) to be held on February 23 (Friday) and 24 (Saturday), 2024 at the Kyoto International Conference Center.

The JSRA was founded in 1971 as a society for the study of prosthetic joints , and today has grown into a large organization with more than 4,000 regular members. Looking at the clinical outcomes of replacement arthroplasty, thanks to the efforts of many of our predecessors, we have seen great improvement in the durability of prosthetic joints, while the number of joint replacement surgeries performed in Japan is increasing from year to year. That said, there still remain some challenges related to prosthetic joints, which we should address at the JSRA Annual Meeting.

The theme of the 2024 JSRA Annual Meeting is “Kiwami: The pinnacle of perfection (The art of arthroplasty surgery; Ultimate technology in arthroplasty; and Keys for high-quality clinical research). Under the theme, we will organize the Annual Meeting in line with the goals of the JSRA—to encourage research activities; train and educate young orthopaedic surgeons; and promote international involvement. To be specific, we will include a number of attractive events in the program of the Annual Meeting, such as video sessions to share advanced surgical techniques and symposiums to discuss the latest technologies, as well as seminars on clinical research topics and tips for writing research papers, which started with the 52nd Annual Meeting.

Past JSRA Annual Meetings were attended by guests from overseas arthroplasty societies. For the 2024 Annual Meeting, we will invite four speakers from the International Society for Technology in Arthroplasty (ISTA)—Dr. Fares Haddad, MD, Dr. Philip Noble, PhD, Dr. Mort Meftah, MD, and Dr. Nico Verdonschott , PhD—who will be present at the combined symposiums on robotics and personalized planning and deliver lectures on new cementless fixation and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) using polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK). Besides these ISTA members, we will invite many distinguished arthroplasty surgeons from overseas, including Dr. Javad Parvizi, MD (USA), Dr. Henry Clark, MD (USA), Dr. Sebastien Lustig, MD (France), Dr. Simon Young, MD (New Zealand), and Dr. Jonathan M. Vigdorchik, MD (USA). Their attendance will help enhance the international presence of the Annual Meeting. For the first time, the 2024 Annual Meeting will also invite abstracts not only in Japanese but also in English. We look forward to receiving English abstracts from Asia and other parts of the world, as well as from Japan.

Although Kyoto is particularly cold in February, the city has many amazing faces that can be seen only on cold winter days. We look forward to welcoming many of you to Kyoto for the 2024 Annual Meeting.
