Congress President, the 127th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Professor, Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine |
I am honored to announce that Tohoku University will host the 127th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (JORL-HNS) in Sendai City from May 20 (Wednesday) to 23 (Saturday), 2026. The meeting will be held face-to-face at the Centennial Hall of Tohoku University (Hagi Hall), Exhibition building of the Sendai International Center, Sendai Kokusai Hotel and the Westin Sendai, and also made available for on-demand viewing afterwards.
The theme chosen for the 127th JORL-HNS Annual Meeting is “Learning in the City of Trees: Advancing and Promoting Compassionate Medical Care.”
Many of the patients with diseases in otorhinolaryngology, head and neck experience problems in hearing, speaking, smelling, tasting and eating, depending on the nature of the disease and the part of the body affected. These functions are closely associated with quality of life and thus have to be restored. Furthermore, in the treatment of head and neck cancers, which have been increasing recently, importance should be placed on preserving the functions of speaking, swallowing and breathing to enable the patients to return to everyday life, in addition to prolonging their lives.
The recent emergence of advanced testing equipment for outpatients, AI-assisted diagnostic systems, surgical assistance devices such as endoscopes and robots, and immunotherapy that can trigger biological reactions at the molecular level has allowed the continued development of therapies that are effective in saving lives and preserving functions of patients. These therapies should be made widely available to healthcare providers and used appropriately.
The forthcoming Annual Meeting will address the topic of developing new therapies that are gentle on patients and healthcare providers both mentally and physically, and aim to make therapies approved for clinical use widespread among doctors at the forefront of clinical practice throughout Japan. In so doing, we hope to provide an outstanding opportunity for JORL-HNS members, participating in person and via on-demand viewing, to obtain and exchange useful information.
Sendai, where the Annual Meeting will be held, has a history of encouraging residents to plant trees in their home gardens since the Edo period, hence its nickname, the “City of Trees.” In May, the city comes alive with fresh greenery, and the pleasant breeze makes it perfect for taking a leisurely stroll and dining together. We look forward to welcoming you to the City of Trees and learning together in its refreshing setting.
