It is a great honor to be hosting the 24th Congress of the Asian Association of Pediatric Surgeons (AAPS2016) and the 53rd Annual Congress of the Japanese Society of Pediatric Surgeons (JSPS2016), events that will be held at the Hilton Fukuoka Sea Hawk in Fukuoka City for three days, from May 24 (Tue) to 26 (Thu), 2016. In addition, the Executive Meeting of the World Federation of Associations of Pediatric Surgeons (WOFAPS) will be held on May 22 (Sun), and the International Pediatric Endosurgery Group’s 25th Annual Congress for Endosurgery in Children (IPEG2016) will be held from May 26 (Thu) to 28 (Sat) at the same venue. This is the third occasion that the Department of Pediatric Surgery of Kyushu University has hosted the Annual Congress, 16 years since the 37th Congress led by Professor Sachiyo Suita and, further back, the 20th Congress led by Professor Keiichi Ikeda.
We successfully hosted the 55th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology in 2013 and the 51st Annual Congress of Japan Society of Perinatal and Neonatal Medicine in 2015, both under the main theme of “Communication, Collaboration and Cooperation.” While those two past congresses dealt with a variety of fields and professions, the upcoming events focus on my area of specialization, pediatric surgery, and as the third time is lucky, we again chose the theme of “Communication, Collaboration and Cooperation.” Communication refers to the teamwork among medical staff, collaboration is required to provide medicine centering on patients needs, and cooperation is something Japan promotes while playing a leading role in Asia and the world.
All subjects concerning pediatric surgery are welcomed to submit AAPS2016 (English abstracts) and JSPS2016 (Japanese abstracts). Special symposium and panel discussion will be planned by the program committee of JSPS.
AAPS2016 will be held as an international session of JSPS2016, and some globally well-known pediatric surgeons, who are active members of WOFAPS and have written textbooks in the field will attend. We will ask them to serve as moderators and keynote lecturers to help provide even more meaningful English sessions for AAPS2016. As the Pediatric Surgery International (PSI) is an official journal of both the Japanese Society of Pediatric Surgeons and the Asian Association of Pediatric Surgeons, we have established a system that allows members to submit papers from each organization separately. Many English papers are expected to be presented. Furthermore, a joint session “Biliary Atresia” with IPEG is planned on May 26 (Thu).
Let me mention here that the invitation of AAPS was realized by Dr. Miyano’s recommendation, and the invitation of IPEG was brought about by the enthusiastic commitment and efforts of Dr. Yamataka and Dr. Iwanaka. The invitation of WOFAPS came through thanks to Dr. Kitagawa’s endeavors. In addition, all pediatric surgeons in Kyushu, represented by Dr. Yoshiaki Tanaka, are united in preparing to host the Congress. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation for their cooperation.
Fukuoka, the host city, has very convenient public transportation systems. Fukuoka Airport, the hub airport of Kyushu, is located very near the city center, and the JR Kyushu Shinkansen line was inaugurated several years ago. Fukuoka is also blessed with delicious seafood from the Genkai Sea. I hope all of the participants will fully enjoy the early summer in Fukuoka. All the members of our department are truely looking forward to the participation of so many members of the Society.
