Welcome Message

The 32nd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Association of
Cardiovascular Intervention and Therapeutics (CVIT2024)
President Yasumi Igarashi, Sapporo-Kosei General Hospital

Yasumi Igarashi

It is our great pleasure to host the 32nd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Association of Cardiovascular Intervention and Therapeutics (CVIT2024). The CVIT2024 will be held in Sapporo for the first time in 15 years, and we have been earnestly preparing to welcome you once again to Hokkaido. The meeting will take place over three days from July 25 (Thur.) to 27 (Sat.), 2024 at five venues mainly located in central Sapporo city. Although they are spread out, you will be able to move easily from venue to venue by shuttle buses, ensuring a high level of convenience. Following last year, it will be a fully face-to-face meeting instead of a hybrid format. One purpose of academic meetings is to network with other members as well as to present the latest research findings. Such meetings provide opportunities for delegates’ research to evolve through face-to-face interactions inside and outside the venue. We hope the meeting will provide an opportunity for doctors, particularly up-and-coming junior doctors who will lead future interventional treatments, to gather in Sapporo and network in person. We have received 1,485 abstracts, the highest number ever submitted to CVIT, and would like to thank all our members for the contributions. Returning to the original scope of CVIT, which is based on clinical practice, we decided to proactively select abstracts particularly related to interesting case reports. As a result, 1,357 abstracts were selected with an acceptance rate of 91%.

In 2024, work-style reforms for Japanese doctors were implemented. However, these are seen as a setback for cardiovascular care, and the negative impact is becoming apparent in the form of a lower number of residents aspiring to cardiovascular specialties. In light of this situation, CVIT2024’s theme has been set as "The Fusion of Reform and Progress" to explore future interventional treatments. The program includes 61 symposium and panel-discussion sessions, and we look forward to deepening discussions towards future treatments in each session. In addition, there is a call to review the future of CVIT itself at CVIT2024, and we would like to take this opportunity to reconsider CVIT’s original purpose and discuss its direction in order to make the most of the limited sponsorship funds. In line with CVIT’s philosophy, which is rooted in clinical practice, we have incorporated interactive activities that will benefit the practice of catheter-based therapies during the meeting. We have also organized sessions for residents as well as the traditional YIA sessions. While CVIT2024 features an enriched program for junior doctors, we believe that active international networking is an important direction that CVIT should continue. As such, we have invited many international faculties and organized numerous programs. Three renowned overseas professors have kindly accepted invitations to give talks at the invited lecture series. Prof. Patrick W. Serruys at the University of Galway’s CORRIB Core Laboratory will visit Sapporo and give a talk. He has been leading the world in interventional therapy for many years. From the US, Prof. Navin Kapur at Tufts Medical Center and Dr. Ziad Ali at St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center will give talks on the practical use of Impella and the latest clinical outcomes of OCT, respectively. In addition, there will be joint sessions with other Asian societies, including TTT (Taiwan), APSIC (Southeast Asia), KSIC (Korea), HKSTENT (Hong Kong), SingaLive, India LIVE, and ISCAM (Indonesia). We invite you to participate in these sessions as an opportunity for international networking. Live, streamed demonstrations will also take place over three days at the Kanamoto Hall venue, featuring live treatment of a wide range of lesions, including PCI, PPI, and SHD. They will be broadcast from Sapporo-Kosei General Hospital, Sapporo Higashi Tokushukai Hospital, and Caress Sapporo Tokeidai Memorial Hospital. For the special lecture, we have invited Mr. Hideki Kuriyama, 2023 WBC Japan team manager/chief baseball officer of the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters. He led the team to victory in the WBC, and will give a talk on the power of belief.

CVIT2024 is fast approaching, and late July is the perfect time to visit Hokkaido thanks to the beautiful weather. We will welcome you with the hospitality Japan is renowned for, and look forward to seeing you in Sapporo in the summer of 2024.
