Dr. Daniela Cota
MD, INSERM Research Director
laboratory head, “Energy Balance and Obesity” laboratory
Deputy Director INSERM U1215 Neurocentre Magendie, Bordeaux, France.
Daniela Cota obtained her Medical Degree at the University of Bologna, Italy (1999) and carried out post-doctoral research at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Munich, Germany (2001-2003) and at the University of Cincinnati, USA (2004-2007).
In 2008, thanks to the prestigious INSERM Avenir prize, Dr. Cota established her laboratory at the NeuroCentre Magendie in Bordeaux, France. Dr. Cota’s lab studies the neural mechanisms and molecular events involved in the hypothalamus-periphery cross-talk relevant for the regulation of food intake, body weight and whole body metabolism. The work of her lab has so far critically contributed to understanding the roles of lipid-based, energy-related signaling systems, such as the endocannabinoid-CB1 and the bile acids-TGR5 systems, and of the energy sensor mTOR, in the brain-periphery crosstalk regulating energy balance, pinpointing the relevance of some of these mechanisms as potential therapeutic targets for obesity and type 2 diabetes. Current work focuses, among other aspects, on disentangling the molecular and functional heterogeneity of the hypothalamic POMC neurons in the control of feeding behavior and beyond.
