Dr Ciaran Murphy-Royal, Associate Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Montreal, investigates the dynamics of glia-neuron interactions in conditions of both physiological and pathological stress. Their lab uses a wide variety of methodologies including electrophysiology, two-photon imaging, fiber photometry, as well as transgenic mouse lines to reveal how astrocytes regulate synaptic transmission, plasticity, and behavior. Dr Murphy-Royal’s team has a primary focus on the hormonal mechanisms of stress, specifically relating to glucocorticoid signalling in astrocytes, and have recently showed that astrocytes are primary drivers of the neuroendocrine response to stress.
