Heather B. Patisaul Ph.D. is the Scientific Director of the Division of Translational Toxicology (DTT) at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS/NIH). Her research explores how exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) during critical periods of brain development affects sexually dimorphic neuroendocrine systems and behaviors. Compounds of interest include Bisphenol A (BPA), phytoestrogens, and flame retardants. For her groundbreaking work, she uses a variety of model organisms and approaches relevant to neurodevelopmental disorders but unfamiliar to toxicology, and examines non-traditional targets of EDCs including oxytocin and vasopressin pathways using 3D imaging and other tools. Long invested in science communication and policy work, particularly regarding issues related to environmental health, neurodevelopmental disorders, and chemical testing, Dr. Patisaul has published over 130 papers and served on numerous expert panels and working groups aimed at reducing health effects associated with developmental neurotoxicants. She co-authored the 2017 book Endocrine Disruptors, Brain and Behavior, is a Board member of the Endocrine Society, and recipient of the 2022 Society of Toxicology Reproductive and Developmental Toxicology Specialty Section Mid-Career Award.
