Emna Ouni
UMR1279 - Tumor Cell Dynamics Unit, Cell Biology of Organelle Networks Team, Gustave Roussy, Villejuif, France
Emna Ouni
As a PhD and a bioengineer, Emna Ouni has been particularly enthusiastic and impressed by the perspective of creating artificial organs on demand. But soon, she noticed how much limited our knowledge about the human cells’microenvironment (matrisome/extracellular matrix) is and how it is hampering any attempt of creating biofunctional designs. This is when she chose to make biomimetism her mission.
This mission started by reverse bioengineering the human ovary and developing tailored methods to unravel the proteomics, biomechanics and architecture of the human ovarian matrisome from prepuberty to menopause. This led to providing a first blueprint to leap to the next generation of bio-inspired tissue-engineered ovaries.
Her ultimate goal is to carry on this mission and extend it to other tissues and organs to fuse engineering with fundamental research and use multidisciplinary approaches in order to create functional 3D models of human organs for precision medicine, regenerative medical applications and drug discovery.

Karla Hutt
Professor Karla Hutt is an NHMRC Investigator, Deputy Head (Reseach) of the Department of Anatomy and Developmental Biology and co-Head of the Development and Stem Cells Discovery Program at Monash University. She obtained her PhD from the Australian National University in 2006, where her studies focussed on understanding ovarian development. She then undertook her postdoctoral studies at the University of Kansas Medical Center (USA), investigating the impact of environmental toxicants on oocyte and embryo quality. In 2008 she returned to Australia to work with Professor Jock Findlay as an NHMRC Peter Doherty Fellow. She was subsequently awarded an NHMRC CD1 Fellowship and joined the Department of Anatomy and Developmental Biology at Monash University in 2015, where she now leads the Ovarian Biology Laboratory. Her lab investigates the biological, cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the loss of oocyte number and quality associated with reproductive aging, contaminated environments, cancer treatment and infection. Her goal is to use these insights to develop innovative strategies to protect the ovary from damage and preserve optimal fertility. Her research is supported by grants and fellowships from the ARC, NHMRC, NBCF and CCV.

I am currently a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and the founder of the Preimplantation Genetic Testing PGT) Laboratory and the Prenatal Genetic Diagnosis Centre (PGDC) at Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), serving now as the Deputy Director in charge of laboratory services. The PGT and PGDC are both one of the most active and productive centers in Asia, serving as a tertiary referral and training center for PGT and prenatal testing for both the public and private clinical sectors in Hong Kong, mainland China and Asia. As a pioneer in PGT and prenatal diagnosis, my team utilizes state-of-the-art genomic technologies, including chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) and genome sequencing, and we first reported the outcome of a multi-centre mosaic embryo transfer pregnancy outcome in Asia and the contribution of pathogenic chromosome copy number variants (CNVs) in fetus with high nuchal translucency. In 2021, I established the Fertility Preservation Research Centre to enhance the outcome of in-vitro fertilization pregnancies
My achievements include over 225 publications in international peer-reviewed journals, with several landmark papers uncovering the contribution of CNVs in fetuses with structural malformations, and an H-index of 44. Recently, my laboratory pioneered the novel application of Low-pass whole-genome sequencing (Low-pass WGS) method which can detect balanced chromosomal structural variants (SVs) or rearrangements that contribute to human diseases.
I received over 45 competitive research grants as PI or co-PI from Hong Kong UGC, NSFC in China, and NIH in US in a scale of 0.5 million to 35 million HKD, and a recent 10 million dollar donation for my work on reproductive genetics. In acknowledgment of my contributions to genetics, I received the Excellent Research Award from the Food and Health Bureau, an international Outstanding Contributions Award for Prevention and Control of Birth Defects and Excellence in Genetics Education Award by the Association of Chinese Geneticists in America (ACGA).
I have served as organizing committee member/scientific adviser/chairperson in seven international professional and academic meetings since 2010 including the Asia Pacific Congress in Maternal and Fetal Medicine, Vice-President of the Hong Kong Society of Genetics Counselling, Board of Director of the PGDIS and Board Member of the Hong Kong Society of Medical Genetics. In addition, I serve as editorial board member of Human Genetics and Prenatal Diagnosis. I have also provided consultancy service to the Industry on trials of new instruments and platforms intended for clinical laboratory service in and outside Hong Kong.

Sherman J Silber
He performed the world’s first microsurgical vasectomy reversal, as well as the first testicle transplant, in the 70’s and now in the current century, the world’s first ovary transplant. He was the first to develop the TESE and MESA techniques for retrieving testicular and epididymal sperm in azoospermic men. He headed the clinical MIT team that first mapped and sequenced the Y chromosome in infertile men and discovered the now famous DAZ gene for male fertility. His research includes also the study of reproduction and fertility in zoo animals and endangered species. Most recently he has perfected the preservation of fertility for cancer patients with ovarian freezing and transplantation and thereby figured out how to extend the reproductive biological clock of women. He has helped pioneer minimal ovarian stimulation to reduce IVF costs and eliminate complications while maintaining the very highest success rate, even in older women. He has even recently answered the age-old question of why the dinosaurs went extinct by extending his research on male infertility and the Y chromosome, discovering that the change in earth temperature 65,000,000 years ago led to the birth of a skewed male/female sex ratio.
He now heads the clinical team on the CHOSE project to transform skin biopsy cells into eggs and sperm in humans.
Dr. Silber went to medical school at the University of Michigan, did post-graduate training at Stanford University, and then again at the University of Michigan. From 1967 to 1969, he provided medical care via the U. S. Public Health Service to Eskimos, Indians, and Aleuts. Then he taught at the University of Melbourne Medical School in Australia, and later at the University of California Medical School in San Francisco. He is a scientific collaborator at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at the Kato Clinic in Tokyo, and at the University of Kyushu in Japan, and is a full professor at the University of Amsterdam, and at Sun Yat Sen University Medical School in China. His major clinical medical practice is in St. Louis, Missouri.
