About the 9th Takao International Symposium
Purpose of the 9th Takao International Symposium
[Purpose]
At the 62nd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery (JSPCCS), we will host the 9th Takao International Symposium on the final day (July 11, 2026). This special symposium, held under the theme “The Takao Tribute Symposium for Life-long Cardiology – Legacy & Innovation in Development, Genetics and Regeneration –”, will invite distinguished medical researchers and clinicians from Japan and abroad. Co-hosted by the Japanese Society for Cardiovascular Development and Morphology, a subsidiary society of JSPCCS, the symposium will also serve as the 25th Annual Meeting of that society.
The Takao International Symposium was first held in 1978, led by the late Professor Atsuyoshi Takao, Professor Emeritus of Tokyo Women’s Medical University. It was established with the aim of advancing embryology, morphology, genetics, etiological research, as well as treatment and prevention in the field of pediatric cardiology. Since then, the symposium has been held approximately every five years, each time drawing around 200 participants and inviting leading researchers and clinicians from around the world.
Professor Takao is renowned for identifying what is now known as 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, referred to as TAKAO syndrome, and is widely recognized as the “father of pediatric cardiology in Japan.” He made significant contributions to the field before passing away in 2006 at the age of 81.
Today, the “Takao Award,” which bears Professor Takao’s name, stands as the most prestigious academic honor of the Japanese Society of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery. Professor Hiroyuki Yamagishi, the President of the 62nd Annual Meeting, was the first recipient of this award in 2012.
Following Professor Takao’s passing, the 7th (2013) and 8th (2017) symposia were held; however, no further meetings had been organized thereafter. This time, as the “Takao Tribute Symposium,” it will be held in conjunction with the 62nd Annual Meeting of JSPCCS, chaired by Professor Yamagishi, the first Takao Award recipient.
By providing participants—particularly young researchers who will lead the future of pediatric cardiology in Japan—with opportunities for face-to-face interaction, lectures, and discussions with world-class experts, the symposium aims to continue its longstanding mission of inspiring attendees and advancing research, clinical practice, and education in this field.
