Hidemichi Watari, M.D., Ph.D.
President, 78th Annual Congress of the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology
Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
Graduate School of Medicine, Hokkaido University
The 78th Annual Congress of the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (JSOG) will be held over three days, from Friday, May 15 to Sunday, May 17, 2026, at four venues in Sapporo. It is a great honor and privilege to host Japan’s largest and most prestigious academic congress in the field of obstetrics and gynecology here in Sapporo, coinciding with the 150th anniversary of Hokkaido University’s founding.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hokkaido University was established in May 1923 and celebrated its centennial in 2023. I have been serving as its seventh chair since 2018. Past congresses held in Sapporo were led by Professor Genichi Ogawa (the second chair, 9th Congress in 1957), Professor Seiichiro Fujimoto (the fifth chair, 53rd Congress in 2001), and Professor Noriaki Sakuragi (the sixth chair, 65th Congress in 2013). This marks the fourth time Hokkaido University will host the congress, and the first in 13 years. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all JSOG members for granting us this opportunity.
The theme of this year's congress is:
“Ambition to enlighten the world”
This theme embodies our commitment to advancing both basic and clinical research from this northern land, and expresses our hope that the congress will serve as a vital platform for academic and international exchange.
The symposia—the highlights of the congress—will focus on the following three areas:
Each of these symposia is designed with a strong clinical orientation. I extend my sincere thanks to the program committee members and all contributors for their dedication.
We believe this congress plays an essential role in bringing together obstetricians and gynecologists from all generations across Japan, along with international colleagues, to engage in cross-disciplinary learning and intergenerational dialogue. At the same time, amid societal shifts—particularly reforms in work styles—this congress also offers a valuable opportunity to reflect on how OB-GYN professionals can continue to grow, adapt, and define their future roles. We hope it will be a forum for learning and meaningful discussion.
May in Hokkaido brings refreshingly crisp weather, with cool mornings and evenings. We warmly encourage participants to take time between academic sessions to enjoy the region’s scenic beauty and renowned cuisine. On behalf of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hokkaido University, the WIND General Incorporated Association, and our alumni community, we are committed to providing heartfelt hospitality to all who join us in springtime Sapporo.
We look forward to welcoming many of you—from across Japan and around the world—to this memorable gathering.
Warm regards,
May 2025
